    Ce que le programme n'est pas

    Il ne faut pas le présenter comme :

    • une école d'ingénieurs classique ;
    • un Bachelor de management avec deux cours de code ;
    • une solution pour éviter de choisir ;
    • une formation de data scientist pure ;
    • un cursus où la science disparaît après le bac.

    Il cherche au contraire à construire un profil d'interface.

    Le candidat doit montrer qu'il aime suffisamment les sciences pour les travailler sérieusement, et suffisamment les organisations pour vouloir comprendre comment ces sciences deviennent des produits, des décisions et des transformations.

    « Why not engineering school? »

    Réponse modèle

    “I am attracted to science because I enjoy understanding how systems work, but I am equally interested in how technologies are selected, financed, regulated and adopted by organisations. A traditional engineering programme would develop greater technical depth in one field, while this Bachelor is designed around the interface between several sciences and management. I am choosing that interface deliberately, not because I want to avoid scientific difficulty.”

    Ce qu'il faut éviter

    • dévaloriser les écoles d'ingénieurs ;
    • dire que les mathématiques sont trop difficiles ;
    • prétendre que le management est plus facile ;
    • donner l'impression de fuir la spécialisation ;
    • annoncer un projet technologique sans aucune curiosité scientifique concrète.

    4

    Pitch du BSc scientifique

    “My name is [name], and I am currently completing [scientific secondary diploma]. I have always been interested in [scientific field or question], particularly because [specific reason].

    I explored this interest through [project, experiment, competition, coding, reading or internship]. During this experience, I realised that technical performance alone does not determine whether an innovation succeeds. Adoption, cost, regulation and human behaviour are equally important.

    This is why I am applying to the ESCP Bachelor in Management, Science & Technology. The programme would allow me to maintain serious scientific training while learning how organisations make decisions around technology.

    The Paris-Turin-London route is also coherent with my interest in [project], because it would expose me to research, industrial and international business environments.

    I would contribute through [proof], particularly in [AI Society, project, hackathon or student initiative].”

    Questions probables pour le BSc scientifique

    Why do you want to combine science and management?

    Comment y répondre (FR) - Ne dis jamais que tu hésites entre les deux. Raconte un moment précis où tu as vu une bonne idée scientifique échouer faute de décision, de budget ou d'adoption : c'est là que naît ta vocation d'interface. Termine par le métier visé (product, data, innovation, conseil techno) pour montrer que la combinaison a une destination.

    How to answer (EN) - Never say you could not choose. Tell one precise story where a sound scientific idea failed because of a decision, a budget or poor adoption: that is where your interface vocation comes from. Close on the role you target (product, data, innovation, tech consulting) so the combination clearly leads somewhere.

    Which scientific subject interests you most?

    Comment y répondre (FR) - Choisis une matière unique et assume-la. Donne un objet concret que tu as lu, manipulé ou calculé, puis explique ce que cette matière t'a appris comme façon de penser (modéliser, quantifier l'incertitude, isoler une variable). Le jury évalue la profondeur, pas l'étendue.

    How to answer (EN) - Pick one subject and own it. Give a concrete object you read, handled or computed, then explain the way of thinking it taught you (modelling, quantifying uncertainty, isolating a variable). The panel rewards depth, not breadth.

    Explain a scientific concept you find fascinating.

    Comment y répondre (FR) - Structure en trois temps : le problème que le concept résout, une analogie simple et une conséquence réelle. Parle deux minutes maximum et vérifie que le jury suit. Un concept modeste bien expliqué bat toujours un concept sophistiqué récité.

    How to answer (EN) - Use three beats: the problem the concept solves, a simple analogy, one real-world consequence. Speak for two minutes at most and check the panel is following. A modest concept explained well always beats a sophisticated one recited.

    Tell us about an experiment or project that failed.

    Comment y répondre (FR) - Assume un vrai échec, avec ta part de responsabilité. Décris l'hypothèse de départ, le signal qui l'a invalidée, la décision que tu as prise ensuite et ce que tu ferais différemment. La science se juge sur la réaction à l'erreur, pas sur son absence.

    How to answer (EN) - Own a real failure, including your share of responsibility. Describe the initial hypothesis, the signal that disproved it, the decision you then took and what you would do differently. Science is judged on how you react to error, not on avoiding it.

    What is the difference between correlation and causation?

    Comment y répondre (FR) - Donne la définition en une phrase, puis un exemple issu du monde de l'entreprise et le facteur de confusion qui l'explique. Ajoute comment on teste la causalité (expérimentation, A/B test, groupe témoin) : c'est ce niveau de réponse qu'attend un programme sciences et management.

    How to answer (EN) - Give the definition in one sentence, then a business example plus the confounder behind it. Add how causality is tested (experiment, A/B test, control group): that is the level a science-and-management programme expects.

    Which technology could transform an industry you know?

    Comment y répondre (FR) - Choisis un secteur que tu connais vraiment, même modeste (retail, santé de proximité, logistique). Décris la contrainte actuelle, la technologie, puis qui gagne et qui perd. Termine par l'obstacle d'adoption : c'est le réflexe manager.

    How to answer (EN) - Choose an industry you genuinely know, even a modest one (retail, local healthcare, logistics). Describe the current constraint, the technology, then who wins and who loses. Finish with the adoption barrier: that is the managerial reflex.

    What are the limits of generative AI?

    Comment y répondre (FR) - Évite le discours moral générique. Cite deux limites techniques (hallucination, dépendance aux données d'entraînement, coût énergétique, absence de modèle causal) et une limite organisationnelle (responsabilité, vérification humaine). Conclus sur un usage où tu la juges pertinente malgré tout.

    How to answer (EN) - Avoid a generic moral speech. Name two technical limits (hallucination, dependence on training data, energy cost, no causal model) and one organisational limit (accountability, human verification). Close on one use case where you still find it relevant.

    Should every manager learn to code?

    Comment y répondre (FR) - Nuance sans être tiède : non pour produire du code, oui pour comprendre ce qu'est une donnée, un modèle, une dette technique et un délai réaliste. Donne ton propre niveau honnêtement et ce que tu veux atteindre pendant le Bachelor.

    How to answer (EN) - Be nuanced without being bland: no for shipping code, yes for understanding what data, a model, technical debt and a realistic deadline are. State your own level honestly and the level you want to reach during the Bachelor.

    What does a manager need to understand about an algorithm?

    Comment y répondre (FR) - Trois choses : sur quelles données il a été entraîné, ce qu'il optimise réellement, et comment il échoue. Illustre avec un exemple concret (recommandation, scoring, tri de candidatures). Montre que tu sais poser des questions plutôt que réciter des définitions.

    How to answer (EN) - Three things: what data it was trained on, what it actually optimises, and how it fails. Illustrate with a concrete example (recommendation, scoring, CV screening). Show that you can ask the right questions rather than recite definitions.

    Why not study engineering?

    Comment y répondre (FR) - Réponse offensive, jamais défensive. Tu ne fuis pas la technique, tu choisis un point d'application : la décision, le produit, l'organisation. Prouve-le avec ton niveau scientifique réel et ton projet professionnel, sinon la question reviendra.

    How to answer (EN) - Answer offensively, never defensively. You are not avoiding technical work, you are choosing a point of application: decision, product, organisation. Back it with your real scientific level and your career plan, otherwise the question will come back.

    Why ESCP rather than a traditional scientific Bachelor?

    Comment y répondre (FR) - Appuie-toi sur trois éléments vérifiables : le volume scientifique annoncé (plus de 280 heures par an), le parcours Paris-Turin-Londres et l'ancrage management d'une école européenne. Relie chaque élément à un besoin personnel précis.

    How to answer (EN) - Anchor on three verifiable elements: the announced scientific volume (over 280 hours a year), the Paris-Turin-London route and the management footing of a European school. Link each element to one precise personal need.

    How would you prepare for the Paris-Turin-London route?

    Comment y répondre (FR) - Parle logistique et méthode, pas rêve : langues (anglais de travail, bases d'italien), autonomie administrative, budget, capacité à reconstruire un réseau trois fois. Cite une expérience de mobilité ou d'adaptation déjà vécue.

    How to answer (EN) - Talk logistics and method, not dreams: languages (working English, basic Italian), administrative autonomy, budget, the ability to rebuild a network three times. Cite one mobility or adaptation experience you already had.

    What could you contribute to the AI Society?

    Comment y répondre (FR) - Propose une contribution concrète et réaliste : animer un atelier de vulgarisation, monter une veille mensuelle, organiser un mini-hackathon avec une entreprise. Une idée précise et faisable vaut mieux qu'un enthousiasme général.

    How to answer (EN) - Offer a concrete, realistic contribution: running a plain-language workshop, building a monthly tech watch, organising a small hackathon with a company. One precise and feasible idea beats general enthusiasm.

    Tell us about a problem you solved methodically.

    Comment y répondre (FR) - Utilise la structure situation, méthode, arbitrage, résultat chiffré. Insiste sur la méthode : comment tu as découpé le problème, quelles hypothèses tu as testées, ce que tu as éliminé. C'est la rigueur qui est évaluée, pas l'exploit.

    How to answer (EN) - Use situation, method, trade-off, measured result. Insist on the method: how you broke the problem down, which hypotheses you tested, what you ruled out. Rigour is what is assessed, not heroics.

    How do you react when your hypothesis is wrong?

    Comment y répondre (FR) - Montre un protocole : vérifier la donnée, vérifier la mesure, puis accepter et reformuler. Donne un exemple où tu as changé d'avis rapidement. Évite la posture du perfectionniste qui ne se trompe jamais.

    How to answer (EN) - Show a protocol: check the data, check the measurement, then accept and reframe. Give an example where you changed your mind quickly. Avoid the perfectionist posture of never being wrong.

    What ethical problem can arise from data collection?

    Comment y répondre (FR) - Choisis un cas précis : consentement, réidentification de données anonymisées, biais de représentativité, usage secondaire non prévu. Explique le mécanisme puis une mesure réaliste de mitigation. Reste factuel plutôt qu'indigné.

    How to answer (EN) - Pick a precise case: consent, re-identification of anonymised data, sampling bias, unforeseen secondary use. Explain the mechanism, then one realistic mitigation. Stay factual rather than indignant.

    Should innovation be regulated before or after deployment?

    Comment y répondre (FR) - Assume une position, puis la nuance par le risque : régulation ex ante quand le dommage est irréversible, ex post quand il est réversible et mesurable. Cite un exemple par cas. Le jury attend un raisonnement, pas un camp.

    How to answer (EN) - Take a position, then qualify it by risk: ex ante regulation when harm is irreversible, ex post when it is reversible and measurable. Give one example per case. The panel wants reasoning, not a camp.

    Which scientific discovery has changed society most?

    Comment y répondre (FR) - Choisis une découverte que tu peux documenter (antibiotiques, transistor, engrais de synthèse, vaccination). Explique le mécanisme de diffusion et l'effet secondaire négatif. Un choix original bien argumenté marque plus qu'un choix consensuel.

    How to answer (EN) - Pick a discovery you can document (antibiotics, the transistor, synthetic fertiliser, vaccination). Explain how it spread and one negative side effect. A well-argued original choice lands better than a consensual one.

    How would you explain AI to a ten-year-old?

    Comment y répondre (FR) - C'est un test de pédagogie, pas de savoir. Une analogie, une phrase courte, un exemple du quotidien de l'enfant, puis une limite (elle se trompe et ne comprend pas ce qu'elle dit). Parle lentement et sans jargon.

    How to answer (EN) - This tests teaching ability, not knowledge. One analogy, short sentences, an example from the child's daily life, then one limit (it makes mistakes and does not understand what it says). Speak slowly and drop the jargon.

    Describe a situation in which you worked with someone more technically skilled than you.

    Comment y répondre (FR) - Montre que tu sais créer de la valeur sans être le meilleur techniquement : cadrer le besoin, poser les bonnes questions, traduire, tenir le calendrier. Nomme ce que tu as appris de cette personne, c'est le signal d'humilité attendu.

    How to answer (EN) - Show you can create value without being the strongest technically: framing the need, asking the right questions, translating, holding the schedule. Name what you learned from that person; that humility signal is expected.

    What is the role of uncertainty in science?

    Comment y répondre (FR) - Explique que l'incertitude est mesurée, pas cachée : intervalle de confiance, marge d'erreur, réplication. Fais le pont avec la décision en entreprise, où il faut trancher malgré une information incomplète.

    How to answer (EN) - Explain that uncertainty is measured, not hidden: confidence intervals, margins of error, replication. Bridge to business decision-making, where you must decide despite incomplete information.

    What is one technology that is overhyped?

    Comment y répondre (FR) - Ose un avis, avec un critère : écart entre promesse et usage réel, coût, maturité, absence de modèle économique. Reconnais une application où elle fonctionne pour montrer que tu ne caricatures pas.

    How to answer (EN) - Dare to have an opinion, backed by a criterion: gap between promise and real usage, cost, maturity, missing business model. Acknowledge one application where it does work so you are not caricaturing.

    Can a technically superior product fail?

    Comment y répondre (FR) - Oui, et il faut le prouver : coût de changement, distribution, standard concurrent, timing, expérience utilisateur. Cite un cas connu et tire la leçon managériale : la supériorité technique n'est qu'un facteur parmi d'autres.

    How to answer (EN) - Yes, and prove it: switching costs, distribution, a rival standard, timing, user experience. Cite a known case and draw the managerial lesson: technical superiority is only one factor among several.

    How should companies decide whether to automate a task?

    Comment y répondre (FR) - Propose un cadre : fréquence et volume, coût d'erreur, stabilité du processus, retour sur investissement, effet sur les équipes. Termine par le test pilote et l'indicateur de suivi, pour rester opérationnel.

    How to answer (EN) - Offer a framework: frequency and volume, cost of error, process stability, return on investment, impact on teams. Close with a pilot and the metric you would track, to stay operational.

    What would you do if you struggled with one of the scientific modules?

    Comment y répondre (FR) - Réponds par un plan, pas par une promesse d'effort : diagnostic rapide de la difficulté, heures fixes de travail, groupe d'entraide, sollicitation du professeur dès la troisième semaine. Montre que tu détectes tôt et que tu demandes de l'aide.

    How to answer (EN) - Answer with a plan, not a promise of effort: a quick diagnosis of the gap, fixed study hours, a peer group, reaching out to the professor by week three. Show that you spot problems early and ask for help.

    What is your strongest scientific skill?

    Comment y répondre (FR) - Nomme une compétence précise (modélisation, calcul mental rigoureux, lecture de données, programmation) et prouve-la par un résultat ou une réalisation. Évite les qualités vagues comme la logique.

    How to answer (EN) - Name a precise skill (modelling, rigorous mental arithmetic, reading data, programming) and prove it with a result or an output. Avoid vague qualities such as being logical.

    What is your weakest scientific area?

    Comment y répondre (FR) - Choisis une faiblesse réelle mais non rédhibitoire pour le programme, et surtout montre le plan de rattrapage déjà engagé. Une faiblesse assumée plus une action concrète rassure davantage qu'une fausse modestie.

    How to answer (EN) - Pick a genuine weakness that is not disqualifying for the programme, and above all show the catch-up plan already under way. An owned weakness plus concrete action reassures far more than false modesty.

    How do business incentives influence scientific research?

    Comment y répondre (FR) - Traite les deux sens : financement et accélération d'un côté, biais de publication, orientation des sujets rentables et rétention de résultats de l'autre. Cite les garde-fous : revue par les pairs, préenregistrement, financement public.

    How to answer (EN) - Cover both directions: funding and acceleration on one side, publication bias, focus on profitable topics and withheld results on the other. Name the safeguards: peer review, pre-registration, public funding.

    What does responsible innovation mean to you?

    Comment y répondre (FR) - Donne une définition opérationnelle plutôt que morale : anticiper les usages détournés, mesurer l'impact, prévoir la réversibilité et associer les parties prenantes. Illustre par un exemple, sinon la réponse sonne creux.

    How to answer (EN) - Give an operational rather than moral definition: anticipating misuse, measuring impact, planning reversibility and involving stakeholders. Illustrate with an example, otherwise the answer rings hollow.

    What will you contribute to the first cohort of a new programme?

    Comment y répondre (FR) - Une première promotion cherche des bâtisseurs : proposer des retours structurés, lancer une association ou un format, créer du lien avec les entreprises, représenter le programme. Engage-toi sur une action précise que tu ferais dès le premier semestre.

    How to answer (EN) - A first cohort needs builders: giving structured feedback, launching a society or a format, creating links with companies, representing the programme. Commit to one precise action you would take in the first semester.
